It is clear that the experiment was carried out to establish whether lids on pot reduce time to reach boiling point of water (1000C). The main aim of the experiment was make a comparison between time taken for water to reach the boiling point when the pot is covered with a lid and when the pot is uncovered.
In this experiment the null hypothesis is that a lid used to cover a pot will not reduce the time taken for water to reach a boiling point (Trafimow and Rice 2009). The alternative hypothesis in this experiment is that water reaches its boiling point faster when the pot is covered with a lid (McMillen and Behseta 2009).
The materials used for this experiment were thermometers to measure water temperature, heating unit, a heat source to make water reach boiling point, a timer to record the time, water and a measuring flask. The test experiment was to record time required for 100ml water to reach its boiling point with a pot covered with a lid and without a cover.
The independent variable was a pot of water with and without a lid. Time in minutes for water to reach boiling point was the dependent variable. All pots used will be randomised to reduce bias in selection of the pots. Three pots and three lids will be viable to have enough replicates as possible.
This can be achieved through the use of replicate pots with or without lids and carry the test simultaneously. To ensure uniformity in the experiment it will involve two pots of water, one with the heater on at room temperature and the other one when the heater is off (Rasche, 2005). In the experiment pot with room temperature water when the heater is on will serve as a negative control. Pot with 100oC water when heater is on will serve as the treatment while heater is off will serve as negative control 2. Pot with room temperature water when heater is off will serve as a positive control. The statistical test to be used is a test to make comparison (Horn and Swope 2005).
The experiment will be done in a laboratory where the temperature will be controlled (Jones, 2008). The time taken for water to reach boiling point when a pot is covered and when it is uncovered will be the data to be recorded. The experiment is expected to take time in minutes. A comparison will be made on time for water in pots with lids to reach 100oC and time for water in pots without lids to reach 100oC.
The support of the alternative hypothesis is that water reaches 100oC quicker with a lid on a pot. To support the null hypothesis is that water does not reach 1000oC quicker with a lid on a pot.
