Significant dates connected with Veterans Day:

November 11th, 1919 – is considered to be the first anniversary of Veterans Day, which initially was called Armistice Day due to the armistice agreement between the Allies and Germany taken on November 11th, 1918.

June 4th, 1926 – official recognition of the end of World War I as well as assignment of a resolution by the US Congress aimed at making Armistice Day a legal holiday.

May 13, 1938 – Armistice Day became a national holiday with annual observance on November 11th.

June 1st, 1954 – Armistice Day is renamed into Veterans Day in order to honor all the veterans, who took part in World War I, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars.

June 28, 1968 – the date of Veterans Day holiday was moved to the fourth Monday in October.

September 20, 1975 – according to Public Law signed by President Ford, Veterans Day was reverted back to celebrations on November 11th.

Since November 11th, 1978, Veterans Day has been annually observed up till now.

  • According to the version of the Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs of the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the name of the holiday, Veterans Day, is spelled without an apostrophe as this day doesn’t belong to veterans, but is considered to be a day for honoring veterans.

  • Veterans Day National Ceremony annually starts on November 11th at 11:00 a.m. and is accompanied with a traditional wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier placed at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington.
  • California has the biggest number of veterans and is called the Golden State. Texas and Florida are two more states with a great number of veterans. Each state composes approximately 1.6 million vets.
  • In 2014, the number of alive veterans composed 19.3 million people. Among them 1.6 million veterans were female.
  • The vast majority of people consider Veterans Day and Memorial Day to be the same holidays. However, their difference is quite vivid. First of all, Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May and its main purpose is to remember the military personnel, who gave their lives in the service and aren’t alive anymore, while, Veterans Day was created to express words of gratitude to all those vets, who served in the military both in war and peacetime.
